Baby tummy contributor #1

Just five minutes between you and this.

Oh. Yeah. Baby.

First baby bump pic and unexpected hospital visit

Oh, I feel fat! I am about to post the MOST unglamorous photo I have ever seen of myself on the internet. I’m all for baby bellies. They’re cute. But I feel like mine is growing a little fast! Hmmmm, perhaps all that Tasmanian Cadbury shopping and subsequent eating has something to do with it.
I weighed myself this morning and the damage is really not bad at all. I am now 72.8kg, which is a three kilo gain for the first trimester. According to the literature I should have gained about 1.8kg, so I’m only a little bit ahead of myself. Not at all surprising given the honeymoon food we ate! I also have not been exercising at all *tsk tsk* and aim to rectify that this week. I’m really not at all concerned about weight gain at the moment, but feel like I should keep an eye on it for the health of the baby.
Ok, here’s the pic *cringe*

Yeah, I’m pretty sure the 5min chocolate mug cake has a say in the tum. Oh well.
In other news, we had a shitty scare today. I’m still a little scared, but trying to be brave. I started to leak! I had clear, watery, non-scented stuff coming out of my lady-business. After two underwear changes I thought it best to call the midwife, just to put my mind at ease. After a quick chat she asks me to come to the hospital for a check up. Righty-o then.
We’re very lucky that we can do this on a Sunday arvo at the drop of a hat with the private obstetrician. So, off we trundled, tra-la-lee, oh so calm (SARCASM). We were at the hospital in fifteen minutes, again grateful that we’re so close by.
A midwife sees us straight away, she takes me into a private room, and is very relaxed, friendly and puts me at ease. I explain the situation again, she asks some questions, I pee in a cup, she swaps and SNIFFS!!! my knickers (I was not wearing them at the time), and goes to discuss with the obs.
The swap came back negative for amniotic fluid. Phew. It could be normal changes to my “vaginal flora” (WTF?!). If it continues, call back, but everything should be fine. Apparently there would be not enough amniotic fluid at this early stage of the pregnancy to create the amount of fluid I had in my (un-sexiest saving-my-best-undies-for-during-the-week) knickers.
I still can’t believe she sniffed them. Gross.

America - home of the delicious

America just has sooooo much good stuff! The UK is pretty awesome too. By stuff, I mean food and drink, of course. Check out this post by Kath to see the awesome places she got out and about to in one day. Beer tastings, awesome salads, homemade ice cream shops, cup cake shops.....ahhhhhhhhh. Heaven!

Update: OMG and the next day they did all of this!

Stuff I'm reading lately

I read some blogs casually, and Dooce is one of them. I can't remember how I stumbled across it, but I arrived at about the same time as the author's baby, Marlo. Since then I have been fascinated to read her accounts of being a new mum and see the gorgeous baby pics. It turns out, that the writer of Dooce is Heather B. Armstrong, who is on Forbes top 30 most influential women in media list, and publisher of "It Sucked and Then I Cried: How I Had a Baby, a Breakdown, and a Much Needed Margarita".

Most intriguiging to me is the recent posts on Heather's labour story. If you're interested in how she changed her mind from (in  her words) "EPIDURAL ON THE ROCKS, PLEASE!" to pursuing a natural birth, read Labour Story Pt 1 (part 2 still to come). I'm now considering buying the two books she recommends and/or watching the video to add to my own musings about how birth will work out for me and Pebble.

Over the last month I've been thinking generally that birth will be whatever it will be. I would like to try and do it naturally, but know I'm not very good with pain, and if my health, or the baby's heath, is in danger, or I just can't cope, I'll definitely pursue whatever goods they doc has on offer. But maybe I will change my mind? It can't hurt to be well read on the subject.

For refreshing, funny, and real reading, and gorgeous photography of two kids and a dog, visit Dooce.

5 minute chocolate mug cake

A friend (or enemy?!) sent me this recipe this week. I think I might  just try it today! Stay posted!

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE!!
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips or (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract and your favourite tipple
1 large coffee mug
Add dry ingredients to your largest mug and mix well.
Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using), vanilla extract and a drop or two of your favourite tipple, then mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high).
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to
cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

If your feeling very very naughty, cover liberally in Bailey's Irish Cream.

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now you are only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

Here's a few links to others who have tried it, or other versions online. The first link has some more detailed instructions and variations for different strength microwaves, if you want to get a little more technical.

Freaky!

Photos of Pebble

We had a scan on Monday which was so exciting and beautiful. There were two monitors in the room, one for the technician and one for us to look at. I had only the briefest fear as she started to put the gel on my tummy, that maybe it wouldn't be ok - what if we didn't see a heartbeat? In seconds the image of our baby was on the screen, and the little heart was clearly seen pumping away. The technician was awesome. She gave us the full tour of the baby's home (my uterus - weird!), and all the baby's bits and pieces. She said that it was a very well behaved baby, and she got everything that she needed and more. We saw the face, the spine, the ribs, the legs, arms, feet, hands, fingers, toes, stomach, kidneys, heart, brain.... everything normal, check, check, check. We saw bub roll over onto it's (I keep wanting to write 'her') side, back, stomach and wave it's little arms. It was magical and made it all seem very real.
Both Paul and I have started to notice that my bump is coming along. It's not really noticable when I'm standing up, but when I'm laying on my back there is a definite curve inwards at my stomach/below my ribs, that then swells outwards over my lower belly where there is a firm little ball of something growing.

To do list is shrinking

Paul and I pulled a mammoth wedding planning day yesterday, ticking lots of boxes, including:

  • buying wedding bubbles
  • buying boxes for said wedding bubbles
  • buying rose petals to scatter on the tables at the reception
  • buying long lasting tea light candles for the tables at the reception
  • buying a little bag to hold the rings at the ceremony
  • meeting with the celebrant, finalising the vows, and paying off the last of his fee
  • paying the final amount for the cars
  • paying the final payment for the cake
  • confirming and paying for Poppy’s ride home
  • triple checking the bus details and making the final payment
  • confirming the B&B booking, and making final payment
  • confirming the photographer arrival time and making final payment
  • buying new wedding underwear for moi
  • burning CDs with tracks for the aisle walk and registry signing
  • burning a CD for a first dance at the reception
  • booking in the boys for their final fitting and suit pick up
  • emailing all the guests with final wedding details
  • emailing all the bus goers with bus details
  • confirming beauty times for the ladies on Friday night
  • sitting on the toilet a lot because I’m starting to shit myself

Phew! Yeah, the bank balance got a workout yesterday!!! There’s only a couple of things left to do, the main one being WRITING OUR SPEECH! Eeek! Neither of us is looking forward to that part.

Here comes the bride, yo!
